Marketer Spotlight: Gary Vaynerchuk

       Gary Vaynerchuk

Gary VaynerchuckIf you want to be the very best at what you do, you need to frequently turn to leaders in your industry for inspiration and advice. Being part of the digital marketing space, we can’t help but follow Gary Vaynerchuk. Gary offers years of experience in building successful businesses, including his digital marketing agency, VaynerMedia.

By starting a lemonade stand franchise at a young age and using his big-wheel to commute between the various locations to collect profits, it’s evident that Vaynerchuk has a deep-rooted entrepreneurial spirit. At the ripe age of 14, he began working by bagging ice at his family’s business, Shoppers Discount Liquors. When he moved on to college, he would return home on the weekends to work at the family business.  This is where Gary realized how much people enjoy collecting wine. This also came at a time when the popularity of the Internet was emerging, and this prompted Vaynerchuk to have a website built for the business.

Wine Library

The strategy of maintaining a website, called Wine Library, and using cutting-edge marketing practices for the time such as email marketing and Google AdWords allowed Vaynerchuk to grow the family business from $3 million in revenue to $60 million over a five-year period.

Seeing an opportunity to differentiate the business from the competition through video content, Vaynerchuk launched Wine Library TV in 2006.  This was a YouTube vlog that featured daily video reviews and appreciation for wine. The show was a huge success and earned guest appearances on the show from mainstream celebrities such as Jancis Robinson and Wayne Gretzky. After publishing 1,000 vlogs, Vanderchuk decided it was time to end the Wine Library TV era.

The cult-like following of Wine Library TV launched Vaynerchuk into a well-known web personality, which allowed him to foster relationships with prominent CEOs in the digital space such as Kevin Rose and Mark Zuckerberg. These relationships lead him to angel investing opportunities and early involvement with several social media platforms.

Vaynerchuk is passionate about helping brands tell their stories on social media, which is why he launched VaynerMedia in 2009. He acquired major brands as clients early on, such as the New York Jets and the NHL, which catapulted the growth and success of his business.  The digital media agency now represents several Fortune 500 companies, including General Electric and Pepsi-Co.
