Instagram has quickly become one of the most powerful ways to create awareness for your brand. While this popular photo and video-sharing social networking site are all about the visuals, the  Instagram captions that you assign to each post is what gives your imagery a voice.

If you’ve spent any time on Instagram, you’ll know that Instagram captions are much different than captions you would find on other social media platforms. They’re typically brief, witty, and include hashtags and emojis.

1. Don’t go with the first draft:

Come up with a few captions for your Instagram post before publishing it. Yes, while Instagram is supposed to tell a story “at the moment,” the algorithm has since changed to increase the visibility of posts that get the most engagement. So come up with a caption that is entertaining enough to make your audience want to comment on it or share it with their friends.

2. Put the important details in the front of your caption:

You have up to 2,200 characters to craft your perfect Instagram caption, and only 2 to 3 lines of text will be displayed in the newsfeed. This is why you’ll want to include calls-to-action at the beginning of your caption and place hashtags and @mentions at the end of your post.

3. Include a call-to-action:

Historically, one of the biggest complaints about Instagram marketing is not being able to include a CTA button in the post as you can with other social networking sites. Some great CTA best practices for captions include requesting followers to double tap the image if they agree, asking a question, or directing people to your Instagram bio.

4. Limit your hashtags:

We mentioned that including hashtags in your captions can be a very effective way to increase your visibility on Instagram. However, you don’t want to over-use the hashtags as this can turn your audience off. As a rule of thumb, limit your posts to 4 captions, but just using 1 or 2 is ideal.
