Welcome to the new year! As you may have already noticed the year is flying by and I’m reminded at the beginning of every new year to make and stick to a list of “New Year’s Resolutions or goals.” This year I only have one, and I feel very passionate about it. My goal this year is to help empower others to be the best they can be.
One way I try to accomplish this is with sharing what I know, to help others learn and grow, and as they say, knowledge is power.
While I was thinking about what I would make my first blog of the year about I realized there’s always been a topic that comes up repeatedly in my day to day. I’m reminded of an instance that recently occurred where a new customer of mine asked me, “OK Marcus, I get that I need online marketing but what is it really all about?” I started to realize a lot of people know what online marketing is but not necessarily what it all entails.
So, I thought I’d share with everyone what online marketing is to me and why it’s so important in today’s world.
Online marketing is a well-defined long-term strategy based on you or your businesses unique needs that will help you focus your online presence on ensuring a high success rate of connecting with your specific audience. In the last 10 years, I’ve seen a lot of explosive trends around online marketing ranging from the inception of new services to less concrete concepts.
Because online marketing revolves so much around connecting businesses to their customers, it has become a staple of our everyday lives. This generation’s lives are particularly rooted in the digital world, and it has become a necessity in the way we connect and communicate with others.
A lot of good comes from this as it removes cultural, geographical, economical and various other barriers. But this can also make marketing more difficult. With such easy access and a proliferation of services, it’s hard to navigate what to use, how to use it or what using it actually means.
Online Marketing helps “color in the lines” of a strategy on how to make the digital world work for you. It can help you know when and what services you need to use that best suit your industry. As well as show you how successful, your efforts have been and ways to improve. It can also help you identify the best way to reach a particular audience. It can even show you what not to say, do or post to prevent you from becoming the next big meme.
For example, service industry companies shouldn’t always be on every social media service known to man. Instead, they should choose to focus on a solid website experience and consistent, reliable information. Another important factor is a number one search ranking for their industry on all the big search engines.
Service industries need to know that the customer finding them with a simple Google search and being able to see their contact information, customer experience ratings, and services are more important than posting on Twitter.
On the other end of the spectrum industries that focus more on using imagery to advertise should have a solid website and focus on strong online content that drives traffic to their websites such as blogs, social media, and email marketing. Both have very different strategies and audiences, but both have found incredible value in this thing we call online marketing.
So, coming back around to my New Year’s resolution, I hope I’ve helped provide a clearer picture into what online marketing is all about, maybe even taught a few people something new or at least give you something to think about.
If you have any questions, you can always feel free to reach out to me or let me know what you’d like to hear about in future blogs.
Wishing you a very productive start to your New Year.
I’m rooting for you,
